What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root, made of a biocompatible and typically titanium-based material, that is placed in the jawbone to replace a missing tooth root. Once it has integrated with the bone (osseointegration), a crown, bridge or denture is attached to restore both chewing function and aesthetics.

At our clinic, the process is planned with 3D CBCT tomography and intraoral digital scanning; the implant position is determined on the computer and, where indicated, the procedure is carried out with a surgical guide. Internationally recognised systems such as Straumann and Nobel Biocare are used, and the materials used are documented in the patient file.

Who Is It Suitable For?

Implant treatment may be considered in the following situations:

  • Adults who are missing one or more teeth
  • Patients who want a fixed solution instead of a removable denture
  • Patients with no teeth in a jaw who wish to consider fixed options such as All-on-4 / All-on-6
  • People whose bone and gum health are found suitable for implants after examination

Suitability is determined by clinical examination and 3D tomography. If bone volume is insufficient, additional procedures such as bone grafting or a sinus lift may be required.

The Treatment Process Step by Step

Step 1

Examination and 3D CBCT

Bone volume and the position of nerves and sinuses are assessed through a clinical examination and 3D tomography.

Step 2

Digital Planning

Intraoral scan and tomography data are combined to plan the implant's position and angle on the computer; a surgical guide is prepared when needed.

Step 3

Implant Placement

The implant is placed in the jawbone in line with the surgical plan. For eligible patients, a temporary or final restoration can be delivered on the same day.

Step 4

Healing and Restoration

After the implant has integrated with the bone, the crown, bridge or denture is completed and a regular check-up and maintenance plan is set up.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does implant treatment take?

The duration varies from person to person depending on bone condition and the chosen protocol. For eligible patients, the implant and restoration can be completed on the same day, while additional procedures such as bone grafting call for a longer healing period. The exact timeline is set after examination and tomography.

Can implants be placed if there is insufficient bone?

In many cases, yes. Where bone volume is insufficient, supporting procedures such as bone grafting, guided bone regeneration (GBR) or a sinus lift may be performed. Which of these is needed is assessed with 3D tomography.

What should I pay attention to after implant surgery?

Do not eat or drink for the first 2 hours, and avoid hot food, spitting and using a straw during the first 24 hours. Refrain from smoking and alcohol, and apply intermittent ice packs externally. Your dentist will give you personalised instructions.
